Withstands the test of time.
I’ve been wanting to reread The Time Machine for a long while now, and I’m really glad I finally took the time to do it. This book is just as impactful and gripping as I remember. I would definitely say it stands the test of time. The prose makes for a beautiful read, and the simple, progressive story avoids any possibility of confusion. The tale is told almost entirely via narration to a small group of guests, the reader being present through one of these guests. Perhaps the concepts and ideas in this novella are primitive and lacking complexity compared to many writers of today. But I would argue that many modern novels may dumbfound you with mind numbing visions, but more often they lack in depth and genuine personality. The Time Machine, and many classics of the era, are abundant with the ability to connect with the reader on a much more personal level. An aspect I enjoy most in nineteeth century literature is that in many cases the reader is twice removed from events. The story often being told outside the actual events to a third party which the reader is made privy to. You just don’t see this technique anymore.
