That was tons of fun!
We Are Legion gave me a lot of the good vibes I felt reading the Murderbot series. There is a lot of great humour injected by the author, and if you’re a fan of classic sci-fi TV and movies, all the references he uses will give you those warm and fuzzy feelings of nostalgia. This book had a lot of just what I’d been expecting, thanks to hearsay, but there was also a lot of science and seriousness in there I hadn’t been prepared for. However, none of these elements are heavy enough to make things feel overburdened. The jovial nature of the characters and writing is always forefront. Although I will admit some moralistics involved gave me several moments of pause. A fantastic surprise to me was how Taylor handled the Bob duplications, or cloning, if you will. As a rule, clones are exactly that, identical copies of one, but not here. The author has injected the ingenious idea of tweaking each personality to make every Bob different. He’s achieved this in the incredibly believable way of emphasising and de-emphasising certain characteristics of each character, and making it an unexpected consequence of the process. This works brilliantly and is probably responsible for 90% of my enjoyment. The book ends very abruptly, which was jarring, but considering the ‘immortal’ nature of the characters and situational expansion, I suppose ‘The End’ doesn’t really apply. Fantastic series opener. I can’t wait to read the next instalment.
