Description

Amidst the roar of authoritarianism, one writer finds himself on a quest for silence and calm. Fathi, a writer no longer permitted to write, makes his way through an unnamed Middle Eastern city churned by marchers parading their support for the Leader. Stifled by heat and the noise of the chants, bullied by the brutal party faithful, Fathi presses treacherously against the crowd, only interested in visiting his mother and his girlfriend. But as he slowly makes progress through the city over the course of the day, it becomes clear that the regime has plans for him too - and he will soon be forced to make a terrible choice. This funny, urgent novel asks what it means to have a conscience, to laugh, or to endure amidst the violence, strangeness and roar of tyranny. It is both a literary achievement and an act of courage by a brilliant Syrian writer.

About the Author
Nihad Sirees was born in Aleppo, Syria in 1950. After training and working as an engineer, he became an acclaimed novelist, playwright and screenwriter. Finding himself under increasing surveillance and pressure from the Syrian government, in 2012 he left for Egypt and now lives and works in exile in Berlin. The Silence and the Roar was first published in Arabic, in Beirut, in 2004. It has since been translated into German and French as well as English.

Absolutely Fantastic

This was my first time ordering from SciFier but it definitely won't be my last. When it comes to buying books online the packaging needs to be good, SciFier were great they used bubble wrap to make sure they arrived perfect. Amazing range of books that majority are lower priced than most book retailers. Wonderful service, I'll definitely be recommending to everyone. Thank you.
