Description

Evans is in trouble. Once a star of punk discontent, a few wrong turns and a stint in a mental institution find him on the streets and desperate for work. Then there's the savage underground movement that uses Evan's masterpiece, The Pollutant Speaks, as a bible. They despise him for denouncing them and hate the alien superculture that's set impossible goals to qualify for contact. Find a job or be beaten to death in the ghetto of an overcrowded planet: those are his choices. His only escape is to venture further into the cosmos than he ever dreamed. This stunning debut science fiction novel by Alex Cochran explores poetry, politics and law in a way that asks questions about our society today. Literate, adventurous and compelling. Hugo nominated, BSFA longlisted and Nebula nominated for Best Novel 2024.

About the Author
Alex Cochran is a writer based in Cambridge, England. His debut novel, THE POLLUTANT SPEAKS from Bee Orchid Press, has received critical acclaim and has been nominated for Hugo, Nebula and BSFA Best Novel 2024. His works often revolve around possible futures and immersing the reader in the people of those worlds to discover something about themselves. At various times, a scientist, a surfer and a code monkey, Alex focuses on crafting and conceiving fiction with all the pain and joys involved. He has an MA in Science Fiction to go with his near-mint-conditon-unused BSc in Astrophysics. He narrates for the Tales To Terrify and other podcasts.

Reviews
"Like Vonnegut and Whitman took a bath in cyberpunk." GoodReads; "A studied, intricate look at a futuristic age of alien contact." KIRKUS; "Telling this surprising story with brisk efficiency despite rich concepts, a sense of poetry, and welcome literary ambition, Cochran deftly portrays the power of human minds to learn, teach, and stand up to the worst of our species. Evans's journey of self-realization and redemption, featuring fascinating and sometimes head-spinning development of Para language and future technology. This will delight lovers of thoughtful, ambitious science fiction." BookLife - Editor's Choice; "A profound contemplation on the human condition, making it a standout in its genre." Tristin Sylvester; "Cochran might just be your new drug of choice. I know he's mine." Digital Alice Reviews;
