Description

"We become who we are because of our abilities. It's what makes us special." "Yeah, well what if your ability was the ability to murder in the most conniving way imaginable? What does that make you then?" Ivy Brooks is dead. They say she was murdered in a way never seen before. Though she appeared fine on the outside, her heart had been crushed. Destroyed. Completely obliterated. It was her daughter who killed her. And now she's having to live with the repercussions. In a world run by the Civilisation project - where everyone has been sent back to their country of origin for an 'upgrade' - Beck Brooks struggles to make sense of what her grief-infested life has become. Just when she thinks her life is finally starting to sort itself out, things take another unexpected turn for the worst. After befriending a fellow criminal, Beck uncovers the secrets of her past as well as the project and learns what it truly means to be the Heart Crusher.

About the Author
I think from everything I've done in relation to this book, the "about the author" has definitely been the hardest. I mean, yes ok, I was born in Leeds, moved to Luton at the age of six, recently had my A-levels results day, and hope to start university to study creative writing next month. But for an eighteen-year-old, that's all there really is to say. There's no inspiring event that led up to this book; the credit here all goes to my mum. The idea of a girl being able to kill with her mind was something my mum came up with at school and then forgot about it. When she mentioned it to me, a whole load of ideas sparked in my head, and I thought damnnnnnn that could turn out to be something so cool. So at the age of fourteen, I began to write The Heart Crusher. There's going to be no sugar-coating here - it was hard. Really hard to do. There's nothing easy about writing a book at all. And what makes it worse is when you begin to adapt your style of writing to whatever you're reading. But for me reading goes hand in hand with writing. I can't have one without the other. And that's how I was able to push through with it all. Sure there were days where I wanted to give up, days where I wanted to (and did end up) deleting a few chapters here and there because they "just didn't work." But there were also the days when I loved where my book was heading, where I would just sit and reread some chapters because I love them so much. Those days are what pushed me to be where I am today. To sit here, tired but satisfied, and smile because it's done. Finally done. And I couldn't have been prouder of what it turned out to be. Overall, this book is a personal success for me. Whether it makes it to the top or not, we'll have to see, but the experience I've had from it all, the kind of support I've had from everyone around me, that's the biggest reward and I'm grateful for it.
