Description

A critically acclaimed, smart and fast-paced comedy about faked identities and explosive office politics, adapted from Lars von Trier's cult classic film.

The boss of an IT company is secretly selling up. To save face he hires Kristoffer, an actor, to take the blame. Thrown in at the deep end, the hapless actor gets more than he bargained for. In an office of misfit staff, he faces an unexpected dilemma; to sell off the company or try and save his new-found friends.

Through 40 years of making and touring exceptional and original theatre, New Perspectives has established itself as the East Midlands national touring company. This is Jack McNamara's first adaptation as the company's Artistic Director.

A clever and 'severely stylish' play adapted from mad genius Lars von Trier's hilarious 2006 film.

About the Author

Lars von Trier is a Danish film director and screenwriter. He is closely associated with the Dogme 95 collective - an avant-garde filmmaking movement - although his own films have taken a variety of approaches. His work has frequently divided critical opinion. His first publicly released film was the 1977 experimental short The Orchid Gardener and his first feature came seven years later with The Element of Crime (1984). Among many prizes, awards and nominations, he is the recipient of the Palme d'Or (for Dancer in the Dark), the Grand Prix, and the Prix du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival. Nymphomaniac Volumes I and II were released in 2014 to great acclaim.

Reviews
The Boss of it All ( - ) makes a seamless transition to the stage. ( - ) it's a very funny exploration of authority, identity and our need for affirmation. * The Scotsman **** *
A play asking very interesting questions about the nature of leadership and its intersection with responsibility versus anonymity ( - ) The ending itself, surreal and unexpected, is the perfect conclusion to a show of the highest standard. * edfringereview.com *
All office comedy is inevitably concerned with the challenge of being a popular boss; the difficulty of integrating while in charge. The wit and imagination behind The Boss of It All, however, make it completely refreshing. ( - ) It's a joy to watch and, for my money, the best office comedy on at the Fringe this year. * broadwaybaby.com *
Danish master of provocation Lars Von Trier's first comedy, 2006's The Boss of It All, is perfect for a theatre adaptation: simple to stage, strongly character-driven, shot through with sardonic meta-commentary on the pretentiousness of actors and the conventions of directing. And it's funny as hell. * festmag.co.uk **** *
There's a lot of fun to be had along the way, with a strong cast led by Gerry Howell ( - ) * The Stage *
As one might expect, this is a witty intellectual game that has hidden layers and challenges audience members to take their own positions through a series of moral exercises. * britishtheatreguide.com *
