Description

Howarth, 1846. In a parsonage at the edge of the moors, a widowed rector lives with his family: three daughters and their dissolute brother, Bramwell. Though the future will celebrate Charlotte, Emily and Anne, right now they are unknown, their genius concealed. In just a few short years they will all be dead, and it will be middle sister Emily's chance encounter with a grievously wounded man on the moor that sets them on the path to their doom. For there is an ancient pagan secret haunting the moors, a dark inheritance in the family bloodline and something terrible buried under an ogham-inscribed slab in the church. Not only are their lives at stake, but their very souls. My Brother's Keeper is an atmospheric gothic novel that mixes diabolical hatred and vengeance with the supreme power of love to conjure dark magic from the tragic fate of the Bronte sisters.

Set on the edge of the Yorkshire moors in 1846, My Brother's Keeper is a hugely atmospheric Gothic novel involving the Brontes, ancient secrets and the haunted Yorkshire moors, by revered fantasy author Tim Powers.

About the Author
Tim Powers is the author of seventeen science fiction and fantasy novels, including The Anubis Gates, Declare, and On Stranger Tides, which was the basis of the fourth 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie. His work has won the World Fantasy Award, the Philip K. Dick Memorial award, and the Locus Poll award, and has been translated into more than a dozen languages. Along with K. W. Jeter and James Blaylock, Powers is considered one of the founders of Steampunk. He lives in San Bernardino, with his wife of more than forty years, Serena.

Reviews
Combines the Brontes, a mysterious cult and werewolves... run, don't walk, to your bookstore for this decadent Gothic bonbon. -- Silvia Moreno-Garcia
A joltingly good read...Powers brilliantly weaves through the hallowed family history a tale of ancient Irish curses, consumptive ghosts, fairylands and a werewolf cult that is blighting the North Country...gruesome, gripping stuff * Daily Mail *
A masterly, compelling, and moving tale that places Tim Powers among the greatest fantasy writers of his or any generation. Countless novels have involved the Bronte family, but none would so surely please and enchant them as this one. My Brother's Keeper is a pure delight. -- Dean Koontz
My Brother's Keeper is an eerie period piece perfectly well-suited to darkening October nights. * Wall Street Journal *
The Brontes - especially Emily and her dissolute brother Branwell - come to life on the page, historical details effectively turned to the service of fantasy, making for an exciting and highly entertaining tale * The Guardian *
The world of the Brontes and the supernatural feel like natural bedfellows the way that Powers writes them... has the feel of a good Sherlock Holmes tale * SF Book Review *
Powers has form for this sort of historical revisionism... It's clever, as is Powers' original pagan twin-god lore, and the ghostly imagery he superimposes over the Yorkshire moors is properly shiver-inducing * SFX *
A tense novel that delivers all of the things you'd expect from a gothic horror... an excellent modern take on a centuries-old genre * GeekDad *
Has all the gonzo action and excitement as well as the keen eye to historical detail that we've come to expect from Powers at his best, and is a smart and engaging love letter to these pioneers of the gothic form * The Fantasy Hive *
