He graduated from St. Lawrence University with a BS in Chemistry and a MD from Vanderbilt School of Medicine. He had a long academic at Duke University where he was the Chief Medical Officer, the Ursula Geller Distinguished Professor of Cardiovascular Research and was widely published in the medical and scientific literature. His first nonmedical book published in 2020 was William Hart: Catalogue Raisonne and Artistic Biography. Gary and his wife Alexis live in Pennsylvania.
