American Rapture- CJ Leede ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sobbing. Absolutely sobbing. Genuinely not ok. This is it, this is the one that broke me. I wanted to take 4 stars off because of a certain event but that would be unfair to the rest of this absolute masterpiece, and on my scoring system I just couldn’t knock any points. But just for the record, I reiterate, I am not ok. And I’m not actually sure I’ll be able to read this book again knowing what I know now. I’m not one for trigger warnings but this book is absolutely jammed full of gore, assaults, terror and death. No one is safe. It’s religious trauma heavy and this is the base of the story. I absolutely love an apocalyptic horror that guides us through it. I love the tension and dread as we watch it begin. So many horrors are post apocalypse but I love the start, the build up, the “it could happen right now” that’s the horror. The imagery of this book was insane. I would love to visit the House on the Rock. I googled it when I finished the book and it was EXACTLY the way I had it pictured in my head which is a mean feat to achieve. Excellent book and I’m really looking forward to reading Maeve Fly now. In all honesty though, circling back to my dramatics at the start of this post, that scene did actually ruin the rest of the book for me. I couldn’t concentrate and I was actually quite mad. I understand why CJ has done this and there was an explanation in the authors note but it did just seem really unnecessary. Top marks though.
